Children's Residential Care Manager Salaries
Salaries in children's residential care management have risen significantly in recent years, reflecting both the complexity of the role and the shortage of experienced, Ofsted-qualified managers nationally. Registered manager roles in children's residential homes are currently being advertised at £60,000–£80,000 for experienced candidates, with the majority of live positions sitting between £50,000 and £65,000 plus performance bonuses.
For the roles we place, typical ranges are:
- Deputy Manager (Children's Residential Care) - £35,000–£60,000
- Registered Manager (single EBD or residential home) - £45,000–£75,000
- Registered Manager (complex needs, therapeutic or specialist service) - £55,000–£90,000
- Registered Manager (new home opening / build from scratch) - £55,000–£95,000
- Responsible Individual (RI) or Area Manager (multi-home portfolio) - £65,000–£110,000
Performance bonuses are common in this sector and are typically linked to Ofsted outcomes, occupancy and placement stability, and can add £5,000–£15,000 to base salary for strong performers. Candidates who hold an Outstanding Ofsted rating at a previous service are in particularly high demand and command a premium.
What Our Clients Look For
- Children's home operators recruiting at registered manager level require candidates who can demonstrate both regulatory compliance and genuine therapeutic leadership. Specifically, clients prioritise:

- A Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (or equivalent) - required for Ofsted registration
- Proven experience managing a children's residential home, EBD service or therapeutic environment
- A strong Ofsted track record, ideally Good or Outstanding at a previous service
- Deep knowledge of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, the Quality Standards, and safeguarding frameworks including Working Together 2023
- Experience supporting young people with EBD, trauma, attachment difficulties, CSE risk, or complex presentations
- The ability to lead, stabilise and develop a staff team, reducing agency reliance and building a consistent care culture
- For new home openings: the confidence and experience to register a home from scratch with Ofsted and build a team from the ground up
Enhanced DBS clearance is required for all candidates placed in this sector.
